IPOGEA was founded in Matera in 1993 at the same time the initiatives for the inscription of the Sassi of Matera on the UNESCO World Heritage List were undertaken. It is situated in a monumental complex located in the Sassi granted by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and the Ministry of Finance to carry out activities for the enhancement of the cultural heritage and for promoting the international role of the Sassi as a result of the inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Pietro Laureano, director and coordinator of IPOGEA, was the author of the inscription of the Sassi on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
IPOGEAis recognised by the European Union as the body par excellence for the safeguard and the enhancement of European Cultural Heritage and is associate member of ICCROM (International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property.
Currently Ipogea puts forward activities on the following fields:

- - application and dissemination of traditional techniques
- - safeguard and enhancement of landscape
- - landscape planning
- - environmental restoration
- - sustainable development
- - ecosystem protection
- - dissemination of Know-how and Capacity building
- - Enhancement of world heritage and cultural identity
It is experienced in management of multilateral activities, in programmes for developing countries and in co-ordination of multidisciplinary groups of international experts.
It also organizes exhibitions, forums, seminars , workshops, courses and internships.
From December 1998, IPOGEA Region Basilicata. In this respect Ipogea, is engaged in classification and dissemination of traditional techniques for a sustainable management of natural resources, keeping strict contacts with UNCCD Focal points and constantly enlarging its network of relationships with those research Centres carrying out similar activities in the Mediterranean area and all over the world
Ipogea is currently putting forward the organization of the Traditional Knowledge World Bank (TKWB) supported by UNESCO and Italian National Committee to combat Drought and Desertification
